Unity College parents protest at the Diocese Synod Meeting

Parents and students protest about the proposed academy at the Diocese Synod Meeting

Did you know that parents, students, staff and Governors have all rejected this academy?

If you are a Yr 6 parent who doesn't want your child to go to an academy you did not choose,
join us now and save unity college!

SaveUnityCollege are a group of parents, who just like you have been really unhappy with the performance of Unity College and just like you we have constantly demanded to the Diocese of Peterborough that the school improves.

The Diocese of Peterborough are lead sponsors of the academy proposal. Did you know the Diocese of Peterborough are responsible for the previous poor performance and for Unity going into special measures in the first place?

Mrs Margaret Gwynne was appointed to a permanent position as Principal only last June. She came to Unity when it was at it's lowest point. She came to Unity with a proven and genuine committment to turn the performance of the school around. We believe that under Mrs Gwynne's leadership the school has started to make real progress for the first time since it opened. We want this progress to continue and we don't want any more disruption to our children's education.

Mrs Gwynne has been dumped by the Diocese of Peterborough after only 6 months, this is disgraceful and is no way for the church to behave. The Diocese have already appointed someone else to be principal of Unity becomes an academy. This is yet another example of how out of touch the Diocese is with parents, students and staff.

We do not want the school our children attend to be part of Diocese led, un-proven, academy experiment. The Diocese have shown over and over again that they are neither competent or qualified to direct our children's education.

What the academy sponsors won't tell you

Personalised learning is to be developed for all students in all schools – and can be developed at Unity College. We don’t need to be an academy to have personalised learning!

Students in year 10 at Unity College are already studying on vocational courses – the start of a longer term programme by the college to introduce more vocational courses. We don’t need to be an academy to have vocational courses!

An Academy will have the same teaching staff! Which means the same problems with shortages of teachers, the same good teaching and the same poor teaching. It’s not an instant fix!

Good teaching staff will leave if they don’t like the new Academy regime.

The academy proposal is stopping the school from effectively recruiting new teachers for September 2009.

Bishop Stopford School were already working with Unity before becoming a sponsor, they can continue to do this without Unity becoming an academy.

Unity can send students to Moulton College. Bishop Stopford do it, so we can do it!

Unity will improve student behaviour whether it is an academy or not.

Unity will improve exam results whether it is an academy or not.

An academy will not get loads more money – extra money is for buildings, which we already have!

The academy will cause disruption to the courses our Year 10 children are studying now for GCSE. The academy has already delayed the Year 9 pupils choosing GCSE courses for no good reason other than they are not ready to commit. Can you trust the Diocese after the way it has treated Mrs Margaret Gwynne?

Becoming an Academy will not sort out Unity - fully involved parents, the re-invigorated Governing Body, the current leadership and hard working staff will!

If you have any doubts about this Academy proposal you need to join us and SAY NO now!

Unity College does not have to be an academy to be a better school. This is not a done deal!
